Thanks for the link. It is quite interesting to see an African perspective on the Italian models. I know I've found the Trentino federation and Co-op Italia systems very inspiring as models for how we could restructure the economy.

It is very nice to see that a lot of attention has been created around the issue of tutorship at UKZN. However statements like "the students, simply do not have the means and the 'know how' to exploit" do not capture the essence of analysing working conditions and exploitation. Please see the article in this edition of the newsletter on NOCWAL

With first year students, they are not used to having to do work by themselves, and in most cases are not used to interactive classes, (depending on their schooling experiences). The problem stems from the fact that students are spoonfed in school and expect this to continue in university. They don't understand the concept that university is an environment to cultivate one's own opinions and ideas and to learn how to speak for oneself and broaden one's horizons. Some students pick up the idea that you have to work by yourself and in advance, but the vast majority do not, and the crazy thing is, is that this doesn't stop at first year but continues throughout the degree. (Or they could just be plain down lazy).

Unfortunately, this is something that won't change, as students see tuts as an easy alternative to attending lectures. And tutors will continually be exploited. Tutors play a huge role in aiding students. The job they do is especially taxing on them. They have their own research and studies to attend to and having to deal with students who do not pull their share of the work is unacceptable and reduces the amount of time they spend on their own studies. A job is a job whether it is part-time or not. It comes with the same stresses as a full-time job.

Rule no 1 ~ Blame the government.
Rule no 2 ~ Blame the government in lieu of some better liberal form of enlightenment.
Rule no 3 ~ Never apply the same broad sweeping Judgements to yourself.
Rule no 4 ~ Always apply evoke western theory as ideology and principles.
Rule no 5 ~ Make the main black guy guilty of everything.

Therefore, David doesn't get axed because he imagined a world where he so proudly found African society lacking capacity for enlightenment, or that there are better writers (following the market principle of better for cheaper), nevermind that he very expectedly found the natives wanting at the time of colonial expansion. He gets axed because, like the xenophobic violence, it is symptomatic of the governments failure to do things the way he would and educated blacks like President Mbeki not recognising his superior foreign talents. Considering his article ... I wonder how he would do things?

Thank you for posting this thoughtful article. Those of us working in Durban are certainly seeing how little government is willing to do to help the current crisis, as they leave the burden firmly on the shoulders of civil society. Once the crisis eases, we shoul not start to think that it is all over. As your article suggests, we have work to do at very high levels if this is not to happen again.
